1927 saw the club lose a young cricketing prospect in rather bizarre circumstances.

The award of a cricket bat, awarded by the reverend Lord Byron, to the best batting average saw Cecil Chettle win it 4 years running.

The reformation of the club in 1920 saw him make his debut at the age of 13. He was an outstanding talent and rumour had it he could have played at a much higher level.

Not only a talented batsman but in the space of 5 years at the age of 20 had taken over 200 wickets with bowling pace.

However tragedy struck in 1927. Rumour had it in the village he had been accidentally shot by a stray bullet from the rifle range while working as a gardener at the hall.

The truth came in the Nottingham Evening Post in September 1927.

Cecil Chettle aged 20, a gardener of Thrumpton, met his death under singular circumstances.

He was splitting the branch of a tree with a large hammer and steel wedge, when he cried out “Hold me Scottie”, the nickname of George Nicol, a gardener who was standing near by.

Thinking that Chettle was feeling faint, Nicol took hold of him, as they were going towards Thrumpton Hall, Chettle said he was bleeding. Soon afterwards he fell and exclaimed “I’m done for”. He was carried to the hall, where he died at 5.15pm.

Mr Bedford of Kegworth, was sent for and in his opinion, death was due to a stab in the groin by some sharp instrument, which severed a large artery.

At the inquest on Saturday Major H Bradwell (District Coroner) returned a verdict that the deceased died from an injury “accidently received”.

He added that it was a most extroadinary thing that a piece should break off the wedge and strike the deceased with such force.

It was an accident that might not occur again in 2000 years.
