Monday 11th May saw the first fixture for the newly formed U17’s team who have entered the Leicestershire & Rutland Youth Cricket League.

Our first fixture was a cup game away at Sileby Town. With a few of the U17 lads not being available through revision or injury we had a few of the younger junior playing, which will only help them with their experience.

Coaches Joe and Josh selected opening bat and 2nd teamer Ben Clark to be teams captain, he went out to toss up with Sileby’s captain and Ben won the toss and elected to bowl.

Lewis Russell and Timmy Berridge opened the bowling and kept it tight at both ends. Timmy was the man who took the breakthrough sending L Butler back to the shed.

Timmy was replaced after 2 over’s by Gotham youngster Josh Robinson. With Lewis and Josh bowling well Lewis was replaced after 3 over’s. This brought Jake Squires on to bowl his medium pace.

At this point Sileby’s number 3 looked like he wanted to take the attack to the Thrumpton bowlers.

Josh was replaced by 13 year old Matt North who’s impressing everybody at the moment with his no fear attitude and his willingness to improve. He nearly started off with a wicket but it was just a little bit too far for Josh Robinson.

Bradshaw looked to attack the Thrumpton bowlers once and started to find the boundary with ease. Jake Squires finished with figures of 0-18 of his 4 overs. Matt finished with figures of 0-24 of his 4 overs.

When Jake had finished his 4 overs he was replaced by youngster Sam Taylor who was into the wickets in his 1st over with Jack Towers taking a good catch down to his right to dismiss Yates for 9. Sam was then to get another wicket after being hit for a 4 he dismissed Sharp for 4.

This was to bring Smith to the crease that was playing an anchoring role to Bradshaw who was batting really well at this stage. Tim Berridge replaced Matt North on the 18th over.

Sam was then replaced by the reliable road man Lewis Russell to bowl the 19th over. Bradshaw brought his 50 up within the 19th over. Lewis finished with figures of 0-15 of his 4 overs.

Timmy kept it tight in his last over and he finished with figures of 1-12 of his 4 overs. Sileby finished 93-3 of their 20 overs. A great bowling and fielding performance from all of the boys topped off with a tidy display from young wicket keeper Jack Towers.

A quick turnaround saw Skipper Ben Clark and James Anstey opening the batting, Ben and James got off to a fantastic start by getting 10 of the 1st over.

With both openers ticking the score over Sileby finally took a breakthrough in the 8th over, with the score on 50, as Ben Clark middled one to cover and called yes running James out for 21.

This brought Ed Howick to the crease and he looked in good form with hitting the shot of the day through mid wicket, but he departed for 14 when trying to hit another 4.

Timmy Berridge was next to the crease and instantly got off the mark. Next over saw Ben try and hit Sharp to cow corner and got bowled for 22.

Josh Robinson was next up with the badgers needing just 10 to win with 9 overs remaining. It was Timmy to hit the winning runs with a four through mid wicket. The badgers finished on 94-3 of 13.4 overs.

A great first victory for Thrumpton and booked their place into the semi finals of the cup.

First though we have a league match as we take on Long Whatton at home Monday 25th May 6 o'clock start.
