A Match of cricket came off on Friday 23rd June 1844 at the rural village of Long Eaton between ten of Barton and the noted Robert Smith late of Nottingham against the eleven of Barton. The day was fine and the game well attended from the neighbouring villages, together with a fair number of the fair sex, whose presence always contributes more than else to enliven the heart with gladness. Amidst the greatest good humour fortune favoured Long Eaton by 20 notches, as the following statement will show. In the evening the players sat down to a substantial repast at Mr Booths, the Blue Bell Inn, when Mr Burton was called to the chair, and the evening was spent with pleasure and satisfaction.

It is believed that Barton travelled over the river by ferry to the game. Around this time bats did not have a cane handle and springs and all bowling was of underarm or possibly round arm. Overarm bowling was not allowed until 10th June 1864
